Amidst all the hosting, shopping and celebrating, the thought of setting New Year goals and “I really need to” is running in everyone’s mind. From weight loss to new career goals, we all have our wish-list to achieve but the truth is, nearly 90 percent of those optimistically life-altering plans fail. And, that’s never good news!
The reasons are simple: We set goals that are either too high or too low; we aim for things that provide momentarily happiness and while we may start strong, our will dwindles, bit by bit along the way. So, how about we make sure that the year 2019 is nothing short of amazing by setting goals that lead to inner peace and mindfulness? Here are some ideas to start with.
1. Smile More
Nothing you wear is more important than your smile and it has everything to do with how grateful you are for the little things in life.Thousands of great things happen to us every day and they are all cues to smile more — a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee, a hug from your child, a kiss from a loved one — aren’t these all good enough reasons for a wide grin?
2. Eat Healthier
For most of us, changing our unhealthy habits is a challenge of a lifetime but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. The key is to take baby steps in the right direction: Removing processed food with whole foods, eating one healthy meal a day and clearing off misconceptions like healthy food = bland food, are some easy habits to include in your daily routine.
3. Move More
Similar to eating healthier, it doesn’t matter when and where, but get into the habit of moving more. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, go on walks with your pets, join a dance class or better yet, enroll in some form of mind-body exercise like Tia Chi, Pilates or Yoga as these are helpful in reducing stress, creating a sense of inner calm, decreasing chronic pain, and improving your sleep patterns.
4. Learn More
We all have that one thing we always wanted to do but then…life got in the way and we never really did. But now is your chance to learn a new language, instrument or skill. It could be joining a cooking class, taking dance lessons or even riding a horse – the possibilities are endless. And the best part is you can learn most of the things online through tutorials and videos.
5. Travel More
Who doesn’t like exploring new places and experiencing new cultures but travelling (when you have financial constraints, a busy lifestyle or a full-time job) can be tough. There are always events that will get in the way, but there are ways you can adjust your lifestyle to fit in more trips.
For a start, keep a travel fund, look for cheaper destinations and above all, prioritize travelling as a must-do part of your life than just a hobby.
Remember, the world is a beautiful place and it’s yours to see. Have a great year ahead!
