A
Appliqu�
Embellishment on a garment where decoration is made by cutting pieces of one material and applying them to the surface of another.
B
Bull Denim
3x1 twill weave piece dyed fabric, made from coarse yarns. Weights can vary from 9 oz/sq yard up to the standard 14 oz/sq yard. It's essentially a coloured denim.
C
Canvas
A strong, durable, closely woven cotton fabric popular for raincoats, handbags and bottoms.
Chambray
A plain, woven fabric that is most commonly made from cotton. It incorporates a colour warp and white filling yarns that give it a textured look.
Crochet
Loose, open knit made by looping thread with a hooked needle. Used for light summer sweaters.
Crosshatch Denim
An effect in the denim weave created by using uneven yarn in the weft direction, combine with uneven yarns in the warp direction.
E
Embroidery
Fancy needlework or cotton trimming consisting of coloured yarn, embroidery floss, soft cotton, silk, or metallic thread. Although hand embroidery is still a widely practiced craft, most commercially produced embroidered clothes are made by machine.
Engineered print
Also called a placed print because it is integrated into a specific area of the design. Border prints are often engineered into place.
Eyelet
A type of fabric that contains patterned cutouts, around which stitching or embroidery may be applied to prevent the fabric from ravelling.

French Terry
A circular knit fabric with a looped pile back and smooth face.
G
Garment Dye
Garment dyeing is the process of dyeing fully-fashioned garments subsequent to manufacturing, as opposed to the conventional method of manufacturing garments from pre-dyed fabrics. Most garments are made of cotton knit goods and/or cotton woven fabrics.
Gingham
Yarn-dyed, checked or plaid fabric made of pure or blended cotton. Checked ginghams use two colors, plaid ginghams several colors.
I
Interlock
A type of cut-and-sew fabric that is characterized by the interconnecting of the knit stitches. Both sides of the fabric look the same.
J
Jersey
A generic term for a plain knit fabric without a distinct rib.
L
Linen
Fibres of the flax plant, woven into fabrics that are cooler, stronger and more absorbent than cotton.
Lycra®
A DuPont trademark for its spandex fibre. Any time you see this fibre listed on a label, expect comfort, movement, and shape retention that won't wash away.
M
Marled Yarn
Two single yarns of different colors twisted together. You see this mottled effect most often in sweaters.
N
Nylon
Strong, elastic and quick drying. Great blended with natural fibres for durability and stretch.
P
Pique
A knit cotton fabric with a waffle or diamond shaped pattern.
Pointelle
very feminine, delicate looking rib knit fabric made with a pattern of openings.
Poplin
A durable, plain weave fabric similar to broadcloth but with a heavier rib and heavier weight. Made of silk, cotton, synthetic fibres, wool or blends.
R
Raglan
A sleeve where one piece of fabric extends all the way to the neckline, with slanted seams from the armhole to the neck and no shoulder seams. Traditional two-color baseball shirts are a perfect example of raglan sleeves.
Ripstop
A fabric woven with a double thread at regular intervals so that small tears do not spread.
Ringspun Denim
Yarns are twisted to make them stronger and creates an authentic, vintage look. Amazingly, it feels buttery soft right from the start.
Ruching
Ruching is a detail created by taking fabric and sewing in lines of elastic to the back in neat rows so the fabric puckers, creating a stretchy, gathered look.
S
Sateen
A fabric made from yarns with low lustre, such as cotton or other staple-length fibres. The fabric has a soft, smooth hand and a gentle, subtle lustre.
Seersucker
A popular warm-weather cotton fabric with permanent woven crinkled stripes. Launders well and generally does not need to be ironed.
Sheeting
A lightweight, plain weave woven fabric made from cotton or linen.
Spandex
Any time you see this fibre listed on a label, expect comfort, movement and shape retention that won't wash away.
T
Teflon®
A DuPont trademark. It's pretty remarkable, clothes that feel perfectly soft and natural, yet resist stains well. The easy-care Teflon® protector is built right into the clothing's fabric. It lasts and protects for a long, long time.
Terry
A woven fabric, usually cotton, with loop pile on one or both sides.
Twill
A fabric that shows a distinct diagonal wale on the face (i.e. denim, gabardine, tricotine).
Voile
A crisp, lightweight fabric made with a high-twist yarn count construction.
